IMEI and DIRBS: Separate Phone Status From SIM Registration

Updated 6 October 2026 · 2 min read

An IMEI identifies a handset, while SIM registration concerns the mobile account. Use the appropriate device-status service for the phone; an IMEI check does not identify the owner of a phone number.

Use the official IMEI and device-status service

Use PTA’s own DIRBS information and device-status route for your handset. Confirm the current address and instructions through pta.gov.pk before submitting an identifier. SIM-registration checks cannot substitute for a handset-status check.

Keep handset and subscriber questions separate

An IMEI identifies a handset; a CNIC identifies an account holder. A device-status result does not show who owns a SIM or where the phone is. If a phone cannot use local networks, investigate the device status and the connection separately.

Record all IMEIs displayed by your own phone and compare them with the device and purchase records. A phone with more than one cellular slot or profile may have multiple identifiers. Do not post those identifiers in a public help request.

Before buying a used phone

Ask to inspect the device yourself and check its current status through PTA’s official device route. A seller’s old screenshot is insufficient. Keep a receipt that identifies the device and seller, and ask for any registration or payment evidence relevant to the sale.

Do not pay an unofficial service to alter an IMEI or bypass a restriction. If a result is unclear, ask PTA or the operator what that exact result means before purchase.

A lost phone needs more than one action

Contact the operator about the SIM and follow the official device-reporting route for the handset. Protect accounts accessible on the phone as a separate task. Read the lost SIM guide and the missing-device guide rather than assuming a block will retrieve the device.
