Lost SIM or Sudden Loss of Service: Protect and Replace

Updated 6 October 2026 · 2 min read

For a lost SIM, contact your operator promptly to protect the connection and arrange the authorised replacement process. If service stops unexpectedly without a known loss, report that separately and protect accounts that use the number for recovery.

Lost SIM or lost phone: decide what needs protection

If the physical SIM is missing, contact the current operator to protect that connection. If the whole phone is missing, also secure accounts accessible on the device and follow the handset-reporting route. Blocking a SIM and blocking an IMEI are separate actions.

If the card is still with you but service suddenly disappears, explain that to support. Ask whether a replacement or port was requested and what verification is needed to secure the account. Do not wait for a public lookup to confirm a suspected account change.

Before a replacement visit

Use the official outlet locator and ask what identity verification and current fee apply. Keep the complaint reference and bring only the documents the operator requires. Ask whether the replacement keeps the existing number and what happens to the old card or profile.

After activation, test the replacement and review important account alerts. A replacement does not automatically change passwords or end logged-in sessions on other services.

Keep evidence of the incident

Record when service was lost, when you contacted support and the actions it confirmed. Preserve unauthorised transaction or security notifications privately. Follow the reporting guide if you suspect fraud or the operator response remains unresolved.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace a SIM registered to a relative by myself?

Ask the operator about the registered customer’s authorisation and verification requirements.

Will a lookup website recover the number?
